Can Water Bottle be Too Old?

CLASSIC: Half a bottle of water left in the fridge for months. And there is still a little water in the pitcher, who has been on the table since last week. The water Looks great. But it can be drunk?

A bottle of water on a hot summer day can be a godsend. And even if it is old, it can usually be good drunk anyway.

Normally the tank would not have occurred to you, but today it is necessary. Your air conditioning is dead, and even with the windows open is at least 30 degrees inside the car.

You were already quite thirsty when you set yourself for a half hour ago. Now the mouth a desert, and the traffic is completely quiet. This pace is there at least one hour to the next store.

But something glisten seductively from the other side of the car. The door at the passenger seat is almost half a liter of water. It has stood for over three months. Back then took just a sip or two before you screwed the lid back on.

The big question is therefore: Can you drink the rest now?

Water keeps forever

The answer is yes, says Truls Krogh, Head of Department of vannhygiejne by Norway’s national health institute, Folkehelseinstituttet.

“If the water is covered and of good quality, it can in principle be for a thousand years,” he says.

This also applies to water that has been tapped from the tap.

“There should be very little organic material in the water, but most drinking water meets this requirement. As long as it is stored in a sealed bottle, which do not emit substances that can stand for years without becoming dangerous to drink it, “says Krogh – and this is true even if the bottle has already been opened, and you have drunk directly by it.

Why date labeling on water?

It is uplifting news for all who have a tendency to forget the half-empty water bottles in the gym bag. Krogh’s assurances evokes However, another question:

If the water is not too old, why are there so shelf life of the bottles you buy in the store?

Facts

Ask Science Classic

Once a week ‘retransmits’ We articles from our letterbox Ask science archives.

This was originally brought on Videnskab.dk 13. October 2011.

“This is probably the bureaucratic regulations,” believes Krogh.

And then there is the taste. Just because the water is drinkable, it does not mean that it still tastes good.

Drinking tap water may taste oil

Water stored in plastic bottles, can gradually get a strange taste, says Krogh. For even if the plastic is close enough to hold the water, it is not impervious.

“There will always be other fragrances, for example in a refrigerator. You can readily penetrate into the bottle and give the water a foreign taste. If you keep water bottles in the garage, you may even find that the water tastes like oil, “said Truls Krogh.

Water is never too old

Even if you come across a bottle of water from the Stone Age, there would be nothing in the way of taking a sip.

“The water will not be dangerous to drink, but it may well taste bad,” says Krogh, who believes that it is part of the reason for the date labeled water bottles.

“If they were stored unfortunate, they will be able to get a bad taste, and it may well hurt the manufacturer’s reputation,” he says.

Disaster Storage should be filled on glass

Should you also find a very old water bottle in the basement, it’s probably most likely that it is made of glass. Unlike the plastic tube is impermeable to the scent substances. This increases the chance that the bottle has kept on good taste.

So if you’re the nervous type who would like to save a few liters of H2O in case of destruction of the world, you should invest in some good bottles.

“You do not need to sterilize them,” says Krogh.

Just fill the water from the tap on some thoroughly cleaned glass bottles and close them tightly. Then the water will keep the rest of your life and more.

How about an old water glass?

If there is a lid on, the water in bottles as these last for years. The good taste is not necessarily preserved.

We can safely drink free water bottles, although they have been long. But what containers without lids? Can you drink from the glass, which has stood beside the bed since Wednesday last week, or the week-old pitcher of water, which still stands on the table in the conference room?

Again the answer is yes, says Truls Krogh.

“It will probably taste boring, but it will not be dangerous,” he says.

Even without cover water can be drunk for several weeks or months, provided that none has contaminated it with dirty fingers or bacteria-infested saliva. And even if someone had sent a strong wind off into the jar, it is not certain that the water container danger of infection.

“Very few of disease bacteria can live in clean water. After some time, they will all be dead. ”

“But if there are enough nutrients in the water, there will be harmful bacteria that could thrive. In a tulip vase will for example be bacterial growth that one should not consume, “says Truls Krogh.

Uncovered water will be too old

Even clean water may eventually become undrinkable, if it is uncovered. In a matter of weeks or months the water will be contaminated by dust, which can provide livelihoods for microorganisms.

But if you rinse the jug from the meeting table and fill new water from the water machine, even if it has been enclosed in the container for half a year, you are thus on the safe side.

Krogh says that he can easily drink old water.

“We have a cabin of the old kind, without running water. If there is water left when we go back home, we will let it be a month or two for the next time we come, “he says.

And if none other than the director of water hygiene at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health can, so I guess we can too.
