The team of Virginia Martínez Ruiz, with Eladio Jimenez Mejias, Carmen Amezcua Prieto, Rocio Olmedo Requena, Juan de Dios Luna’s Castle and Pablo Lardelli Claret, continues analyzing database of accidents of the DGT. Not is the first study that make with this base.
In this occasion, published in Accident Analysis & Prevention a study descriptive of the effect of the exhibition (use of bike), risk of collision and fatality on the deaths of cyclists in the traffic, according to sex and age, that is in download free until the 26 of March.
I translate part of the summary (abstract) of the article.
This study is designed to quantify the contribution, as a percentage, of exposure, risk of collision and fatality rate-the Association of age and sex with the rates of mortality among the riders in Spain, and track changes to these contributions over time. We analysed the data of 50.042 cyclists involved in accidents of road in Spain since 1993 to 2011, and also for a subset of 13.119 cyclists who did not commit offences but were involved in collisions with a vehicle whose driver Yes committed an infraction (used as a proxy for the total number of cyclists on the road sign). Employ them methods of decomposition and exhibition quasi-induced to get them contributions, in percentage, of these three components in them ratios of rate of mortality for each group of sex and age, compared with the males of 25 to 34 years.
And the highlights:
- Cyclist mortality rates vary widely according to the age and sex of the population
- The highest mortality among younger cyclists is related to their greater exposure and risk of collision
- The greater mortality associated to the age is associated only with greater lethality
- The increased mortality in males is mainly associated with greater exposure and fatality
What comes to say all this? And in Spain the males have used more bike than women, that explains in large part why more men than women die. The men against the women’s mortality rate is between 6,45 and 26,07 times higher, according to the age group.
Decomposition of the rate of mortality for each group of age and sex, cycling in Spain 1993-2011. %E quantifies exposure (use), % (C) quantifies the risk of collision, %f quantifies the fatality
On the other hand, by age groups, things change: the risk of collision is significantly higher among younger (5-14) and aged 15 to 24 than among the elderly. And for the over 35, the fatality – probability of dying once is has an accident – is the component with more weight in your odds of dying in an accident.
Breakdown of the mortality rate for each age group, cyclists in Spain 1993-2011. % And quantifies the exposure (use), % C quantifies the risk of collision, % F quantifies the fatality
Thus, the authors recommend different according to the age group measures: improving security conditions, courses of safe use of bike and more fines and prevention against the use of alcohol among young people (the latter not say why, but surely they will expand in future studies;) and for adults, encourage helmet use and reduce the speed in urban environment they propose to mitigate the severity of a possible accident.
Personally, and in addition to the limitations that support the researchers themselves, Miss in the article the distinction between urban accidents and out of town. The majority of accidents that occurred between 1993 and 2011 took place in road and therefore is more likely that were associated to use sports. Would would be the same rates of having considered only accidents in town?
And another thing that not that not say and add I is that is necessary achieve that more women is climb to the bike, because that will mean that have accomplished that is perceived as a vehicle safe. Meanwhile, congratulations to the team and thank you for the research work.
