Spain: Leader in Road and Cyclist Safety

All depends on what metric you use. He ETSC, a body European independent funded by institutions and companies of all Europe, has published today the results of its program of evaluation of security road, called PIN. And Spain goes well in the photo. Can download if you prefer the overview complete.

Surely by difficulties in the comparison, the ETSC elected as single metric deaths by traffic accident. Seems to us more relevant to join those who died and the seriously injured (KSIs), but in the absence of another metric, which serve these data for comparison.

The pedestrian

It is noteworthy that the countries which produce fewer deaths among pedestrians are also those who make greater use of bike in town, or that have implemented strategies of vision zero: the Netherlands (NL), Norway (NO), Sweden (SE) and Denmark (DK) lead the table of pedestrians killed per million inhabitants. Spain is the tenth in the table, well below the European average of 11.7 pedestrians killed in traffic accidents for every million inhabitants.

It is also true that in Spain you walk much, even more than in other countries as France or Portugal, and that that can inflate this figure. Everything can always be improved: should perhaps think about how he designed their cities these countries and take note. Refer to Cyclingenthusiasm for how to choose bike lights.

There is more data on pedestrians in the report, but already know that here speak mainly of another thing.

Cyclists

Surprise. Spain is the country where less deaths were recorded in Europe by million of inhabitants, followed by of Greece (the), Ireland (IE), Israel (IL) and the United Kingdom (UK). But the table has trap.

The ETSC only has data of the use real of bike in three countries, Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom, so this table not is indicative of it security on real of them cyclists. In the Netherlands or Denmark the use of bike for transport is much higher than in Spain or the United Kingdom. It is expected that there are more accidents (and deceased) with respect to the total population of the country, but we can’t compare what happens in terms of use (per million km traveled or hours of use, for example).

Instead, is striking that Spain is the third country after Lithuania (LT) and Latvia (LV) where, in proportion, die more cyclists out of the city (the ETSC it called ‘ rural’ in the graphic, but in the text it is called ‘ non-urban’). You can have several concurrent causes:

  • In Spain, just outside city bike, use more what surely is due to sporting use;
  • That Spanish roads are unsafe for the bike;
  • That the cities Spanish are safe for the bicycle;
  • That in Spain the bicycle is used little in city, in relation to the rest of Europe.

Again, without knowing the patterns of use, do not know what means this. we need better data!

Finally, as regards the type of accident according to the vehicles involved, the ETSC points out that 62% of fatal accidents involving cyclists occurred in collisions with cars, far above the 52% of the European Union. Outside Spain, the ETSC highlights accidents with trucks or heavy vehicles in Israel (IL, 43%), Denmark (DK, 36%), Belgium (BE, 31%) and United Kingdom (UK, 30%).

The ETSC closes the report with a long list of recommendations to the European Union and the Member States, but that left it for another day. Not leave of consult the report full if do not want to wait.
