Ghost Bikes are white bikes installed in sites of fatal accidents with cyclists as a memorial in honor of those who lost their lives for the rush of someone. Also have the goal of remembering what happened there to that death does not fall by the wayside and is not considered just a temporary inconvenience to traffic of a late any.
The Ghost Bikes serve as a warning to owners of motor vehicles, to take better care of the lives that are pedaling bicycles through the streets. The action is held in various cities around the world and also in Brazil. Here in Sao Paulo, have already been installed four Ghost Bikes (see picture at the bottom of the page). Could participate in the installation of three of them, one of which is named after a friend, Marcia Prado.
With this same spirit, a team of New York is preparing a documentary about White bikes around the world, to raise awareness about the consequence of the lack of infrastructure and support for the use of the bicycle in the big cities. The team has spent this year by Sao Paulo and pedaled with the Bike here. Also will collect images of San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Portland and London. Watch the trailer…
Independent productions like this one, made with the guy and the courage of those who have a vision of a better world, often find it difficult to raise funds. Therefore, the authors have created a Web page to raise funds to pay the cost of equipment, staff and travel expenses.
Anyone can collaborate, with a minimum value of a DOLLAR. Just have an international credit card. The transaction is safe, guaranteed by Amazon. Of course, if you donate more than one dollar they won’t complain. On the contrary: donating $5 you have access to a restricted area of the site to accompany the production closely and see excerpts of the videos will be edited. With $15 gets you a copy of the documentary for download when you are ready, with $25 a DVD and, depending on the value of the donation, it may even appear in the credits of the film. But the greatest reward is, without doubt, have helped to spread this message around the world.
Updated 8/16/2010: the team managed to raise even more funds than needed to complete the production, thanks to ordinary people around the world who collaborated with small amounts. Soon we will hear about this movie. The who collaborated, thank you.
The Ghost Bikes of São Paulo
The first Ghost Bike was installed at the end of 2007, on AV. Luis Carlos Berrini, one of the main commercial and business of the city. Was removed in a few days (I believe it was withdrawn until the next day). Was in an upscale suburb, in front of a Bank and was not well understood. It was ugly, bad for business. Vanished quickly.
The second Ghost Bike was established in honor of our friend Marcia Prado, murdered by a bus driver in January 2009. The white bike is up today on Avenida Paulista, in what became a memorial where cyclists often still pay their respects. Marcia was very dear in the Bike and is always remembered by all of us.
Marcia Prado was honored with the creation of a route Cicloturistica with your name, linking São Paulo and the coast. This route had an experimental opening at the beginning of this year and is on track to become official, open permanently. Today the cyclists have no option to get to the coast, are totally forbidden, a flagrant and unpunished rights violations. The Ecovias, concessionaire who thinks he owns the highways leading to Santos, does not allow bicycle traffic, preventing the passage of cyclists with support from State police and even, amazingly, Artesp, justifying that “is not secure”. It is not, but should be. And Ecovias does nothing to make it safe. After all, cyclist does not pay toll, screw their rights.
The third Ghost Bike was installed in November 2009, in honour of the cyclist Fernando Martins Couto and gari Antonio Ribeiro. To include the gari in tribute, was posted a broom sweeping of streets next to the bike. They were both talking on the sidewalk, waiting to perform the crossing when they were harvested ” ” by a bus at high speed. On installing this Ghost Bike/Ghost Broom, cyclists were present, garis, the victim’s family and a lot of people passing by the site. This white bike also continues there today.
The fourth Ghost Bike, in tribute to Manoel Pereira Torres, was installed in March 2010. Mr. Manuel, a 53-year-old who used the bike to go to work, was crossing the track, with the green lights for pedestrians. A biker coming at high speed around the floor of the bus, with the closed sign to him, reached its Manoel and pitched against the light, the three metres of height. Your bike was launched against the steel post and folded in half, just the force of the collision. The relatives have not been found in time for the tribute, which was performed by several cyclists. One of them carried the white bike on the back for all the way rider square until the AV. Councilman Jose Diniz, where it was installed and still remains, in loud and visible.
And Ghost Bike rally this Saturday in Sao Paulo, pictures and Reporting of honor Marcia Prado Ghost Bike in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday as they were tributes to Marcia Prado and Marcia Prado Memorial remains steadfast Memorial Marcia Prado suffers predation attempts and needs your help
